Child-Adult Relationship Enhancement (CARE)
At Psychology Centre Newcastle, we offer Child-Adult Relationship Enhancement (CARE), a brief, evidence-based training program that strengthens relationships and enhances positive communication between caregivers and children. Developed from a variety of different parenting programs including Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), Helping the Non Compliant Child, The Incredible Years, and Parent Management Training - Oregon Model.
The CARE model is designed for those wanting practical tools to improve connection, reduce conflict, and support children’s emotional and behavioural development in everyday life. Additionally, this training is trauma-informed and frequently used to assist children reduce their traumatic stress symptoms.
About the Program
CARE teaches adults simple, effective skills to build warmth and cooperation with children. The focus is on strengthening the relationship through positive attention and emotion coaching, rather than on discipline or control.
Through the program, participants learn how to:
Increase positive interactions and connection during play and daily routines
Encourage desired behaviour using praise, reflection, and modelling
Respond calmly to challenging behaviours
Foster a sense of safety, trust, and confidence in the child
Support emotional regulation
CARE is suitable for parents, foster carers, educators, and professionals who work with children aged approximately 2 to 18 years.
What to Expect
CARE training takes around 5-6 hours and can be delivered in one longer session or in shorter sessions depending on your needs. Sessions can be provided in large or small groups or individually. Sessions are interactive and practical, combining demonstration, live practice, and feedback in a supportive environment.
Participants are encouraged to apply the skills between sessions and reflect on what works best for them. The approach is collaborative, non-judgmental, and tailored to each child’s developmental stage and temperament.
Benefits for Participants
People who participate in CARE often report:
Improved relationships
Fewer behavioural challenges and emotional outbursts
Greater confidence in setting limits calmly and effectively
Improved emotional understanding and communication
More enjoyable, cooperative interactions
The skills learned in CARE create lasting benefits, helping adults feel empowered and children feel seen, supported, and secure.
