If you are interested in understanding your neurodivergent profile and receiving therapeutic support. Psychology Centre offer the following:
Psychological and neuroaffirming treatments for ADHD are important components of managing the condition. At PCN we adopt a neuroaffirming approach, this means that we recognise ADHD as a neurological difference rather than a disorder. It emphasizes the strengths and unique abilities of individuals with ADHD, fostering self-acceptance and self-esteem.
Behavioural Therapy: Behavioural therapy, particularly Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), is often used to help individuals with ADHD. Behavioural therapy, in its traditional form, is not typically considered neuroaffirming. Traditional behavioural therapy focuses on modifying behaviors and may not always take into account the neurodiversity perspective, which emphasizes the strengths and unique qualities of individuals with neurological differences, including ADHD. However, our Psychologist adapt behavioural therapy to be more neuroaffirming by incorporating a more empathetic and strengths-based approach. At PCN, we recognize the neurodiversity of individuals with ADHD and work to build on their strengths while addressing specific behaviors or challenges. Regardless, it is essential to discuss your preferences and expectations with your therapist to ensure that the therapy aligns with your goals and values.
Psychoeducation: This approach centers on empowering individuals with ADHD and their families through education about the condition. It fosters a deep understanding of the unique aspects of ADHD, the strengths that come with it, and effective strategies for managing symptoms with confidence and success.
Parent Training: Parents of children with ADHD can greatly benefit from training that empowers them with skills to champion their child's unique qualities and effectively guide their behavioural development.
Psychoeducation for Partners: Educating the non-ADHD partner about ADHD can enhance understanding and reduce misconceptions. This can lead to better support and less frustration within the relationship.
Accommodations: Neuroaffirming treatments typically involve making accommodations in various life areas, such as home, education and the workplace. These accommodations can include flexible schedules, noise-reducing environments, and alternative learning strategies. Our Psychologists work with you to tailor a plan that meets your needs and personal goals.
Mindfulness and Self-Compassion: Practices like mindfulness meditation and self-compassion can help individuals with ADHD manage their symptoms and reduce anxiety or depression often associated with the condition.
Holistic Health: Focusing on overall well-being, including diet, exercise, and sleep, can have a positive impact on ADHD symptoms. A balanced lifestyle can support cognitive function and mood stability. A holistic approach to ADHD offers benefits like improved focus, reduced medication reliance, and better overall well-being through lifestyle changes, emotional regulation, and individualized care. It empowers individuals with ADHD to enhance their quality of life and manage symptoms effectively.
At PCN we aim to empower individuals with ADHD to thrive by addressing their unique needs and strengths, whether through therapy, education, or lifestyle adjustments. The choice of treatment often depends on individual preferences and the severity of symptoms. At times, it will be important for us to work closely with other healthcare professionals to develop a comprehensive and personalised treatment plan for your ADHD.
